Costa Brava kayaking: Sant Feliu, Tossa or Begur?
Updated October 18, 2026 · 6 min read
Sant Feliu de Guíxols is the practical choice for a first guided kayak trip from Girona. Tossa de Mar is better when you want to combine paddling with a famous walled town, while Begur suits travellers who already have a car and care more about small coves than an easy connection. None is automatically “best”: the departure point determines how much of your day is spent travelling rather than paddling.
What the trip is really like
The sea-caves kayaking and snorkelling trip lasts about 2 hours and is the most-reviewed of the kayak trips from Sant Feliu. Expect coastal paddling, short cave or cove sections when the swell permits, and time in the water. “Sea cave” does not mean a long underground passage, and access is never guaranteed: wind, swell and the guide’s judgement decide the route.
Sant Feliu also has a second well-reviewed kayak and snorkelling trip. Compare meeting points and included equipment rather than choosing by photographs alone. Operators set their own swimming ability, minimum-age and cancellation rules; check the booking page for your date.
Sant Feliu, Tossa or Begur
No kayak trip from Tossa or Begur is linked here; the notes on those two describe the places, not a bookable offer.
| Base | Choose it for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Sant Feliu | The simplest guided choice and several bookable departures | Resort atmosphere rather than a secluded cala |
| Tossa | Kayaking plus the Vila Vella old town | A fuller sightseeing day and busier summer streets |
| Begur | Cala scenery and flexibility between beaches | Much easier with a car; parking and seasonal access vary |
From Girona, do not book an early departure until you have checked the actual connection to the meeting point. A taxi can erase the saving on a cheap activity. If you plan several coves, compare Girona car hire; confirm parking and summer access with the municipality or operator before setting out.
Who should skip it
Skip kayaking if you are uncomfortable swimming in open water, cannot sit and paddle for the advertised duration, or need a guaranteed cave entry. A Costa Brava boat trip offers an easier ride, although small boats still move in swell. For active travellers who accept that the coastline sets the programme, Sant Feliu is the strongest all-round starting point.
