Girona Airport to the city and Costa Brava: bus, taxi or car?
Updated October 18, 2026 · 6 min read
Girona–Costa Brava Airport is not in Girona’s old town and “Costa Brava” is not one stop. The right transfer depends on the final town, arrival time and season. A direct coach is usually simplest when its timetable matches your flight; a taxi removes the connection; a car makes sense when the holiday includes several coastal or inland bases.
Girona city: check the airport bus first
Aena lists bus connections between the airport and Girona, as well as services towards Barcelona, Costa Brava towns, Barcelona Airport and other cities. Routes and frequencies vary, so use Aena to identify the operator and then check that operator’s timetable for your travel date. Do not rely on an old blog schedule, particularly for a late arrival or winter flight.
The practical calculation includes waiting time. A cheap bus that has just departed may be less useful than sharing a taxi; conversely, a taxi saves little if a direct coach leaves soon. Confirm the drop-off point in Girona and the walking or local-bus leg to your accommodation.
Barcelona is a different destination
The direct bus between Girona Airport and central Barcelona is listed at about 70–75 minutes. It is relevant for passengers whose destination is Barcelona, not a shortcut into Girona city. Check whether the departure is coordinated with your flight and where in Barcelona the coach terminates before booking onward travel.
If you land at Barcelona–El Prat instead, that is another journey entirely. Verify airport codes on every ticket: Girona–Costa Brava and Barcelona–El Prat are not interchangeable.
Costa Brava: name the actual town
For Lloret de Mar, Blanes, Tossa de Mar, L’Estartit or Cadaqués, search by the town, not simply “the coast”. Some places have seasonal direct services; others require a change. A late flight can turn a reasonable daytime connection into a costly taxi, so inspect the final leg before buying the flight.
A hire car is most useful when the trip links several small towns, rural accommodation or early activity meeting points. Compare car hire at Girona, then check the provider’s fuel policy, deposit, excess, pickup hours and late-arrival procedure. Do not invent a saving without comparing the complete cost, including parking.
The robust arrival plan
Save the operator’s current timetable offline, allow time for baggage and keep the address of your accommodation ready. If the last scheduled bus leaves close to landing time, decide on the fallback before flying. Families needing a child seat should request and confirm it with the taxi or rental provider rather than assuming one will be available.
For a city-only break, a car is usually unnecessary once you reach Girona: the historic centre is compact and parking adds work. For a route through the Costa Brava or villages beyond the main bus lines, the car can earn its keep. The honest decision is made from your itinerary, not from the airport sign.
