Medieval villages from Girona: Besalú, Pals and Peratallada

Updated October 18, 2026 · 4 min read

Wooded volcanic hills and green fields seen from above

Besalú lies north of Girona, Pals and Peratallada east towards the coast: three places, two directions. The volcano area, Besalú and Banyoles Lake tour lasts about 8 hours and, of these three, its description names only Besalú (plus Santa Pau, a volcano crater and Banyoles Lake); Pals and Peratallada are not in the description. Check meeting point and programme before booking; the booking page is authoritative.

Plan

The combination is simplest with your own car, because the places lie in different directions. Choose the guided tour if you want Besalú and the volcano area without driving; Pals and Peratallada need another solution. Admission is not automatically included.

Limits

If you avoid long walks, stairs or fixed schedules, shorten the list. Ask the operator to confirm accessibility.

Choose villages by contrast

Besalú is the strongest choice for a monumental first impression, with its bridge defining the approach. Pals offers a compact hilltop core and broad views, while Peratallada rewards slower wandering through stone lanes. Trying to give all three equal time turns the day into repeated parking and departure. A guided trip solves the driving but fixes the pace. An independent car day gives freedom, though the driver must handle access and parking outside historic centres. Check where the tour actually starts and how long each stop lasts. Market days and lunch hours can change the feel of a small village. Wear footwear for polished stones and slopes. If rain is persistent, shorten the list rather than rushing slippery streets. Two well-seen places are a better medieval day than three names collected through a window.

Final decision

Families should measure the day in exits from the car, not kilometres. Photographers gain more from morning or late light than from another rushed stop. A lunch reservation can anchor the route, but it also removes flexibility. Confirm that a guided itinerary names the villages you actually want. Turn back early if the final stop would be only a ten-minute walk.
